Commitment to Non-Violence
Rutland County Indivisible is an inclusive and collaborative organization committed to employing peaceful tactics to protect the Bill of Rights and our democratic traditions.
The national Indivisible organization states: “We reject all forms of political violence and intimidation, no matter the source or the target. That’s not just a moral stance—it’s a strategic one. Movements that create lasting change do so by building trust, forging solidarity, and demonstrating discipline, even in the face of threats or attacks.”
When our members attend one of our events, they commit to participate in a peaceful manner.
Specifically:
- We do not threaten others
- We do not inflict physical harm
- We do not employ verbal violence, including profanity
- We do not engage in intimidation or other aggressive behavior
- We do not commit property damage or vandalism
- We do not stand in roadways or block traffic
If confronted by hostile actors:
- We disengage
- We de-escalate by surrounding and protecting potential victims
- We ensure the safety of the most vulnerable
In sum:
- WE NEVER THREATEN OTHERS
- WE DO NOT RESPOND WHEN OTHERS THREATEN US
On its website, the national Indivisible organization explains: “Non-violence doesn’t mean backing down. It means standing firm in our values, channeling our anger and our hope into action, and refusing to become what we’re fighting against.”
